Synopsis

Synopsis: The Amazing Truth About Queen Raquela, directed by Olaf de Fleur Johannesson, is an 85 minute drama which chronicles the story of a naive but street smart Filipina transsexual prostitute named Raquela who decides to travel in order to find her prince charming.

Like many Transsexuals (often known as "Ladyboys") in the Philippines, Raquela dreams of marrying a heterosexual man from the West. She spends much of her time on the internet looking for men who can come and rescue her. They promise to come, but time after time Raquela gets stood up at the airport.

Her life changes when, by luck, she lands a job as a webcam host on a transsexual porn site. The owner of the website, Michael, a "Ladyboy specialist" who runs his business from New York, promises to help Raquela. Through the internet, Raquela makes many interesting friends. Among them is Valery, the only "out of the closet" transsexual in Iceland, who is looking for someone like herself. Through her friends in the internet world, Raquela eventually gets the opportunity to travel far away on her quest to find the straight man of her dreams.

Curiosity doesn't always kill the cat! I stumbled upon this movie atthe Copenhagen "Cinemateket" during the Gay & Lesbian film festival.Having lived in France and the Philippines, and once having visitedIceland, I grew curious about the movie. I had heard about transsexualswhile in the Philippines and had no opinion about them, but the filmseemed to have some funny aspects, so I found myself a chaperon andthere I went! I am glad I went, I unfortunately missed the first 5 or10 minutes, but the rest did definitely leave its mark on me.

I somewhat disagree with the movie tag line "A Cinderella Story," thereis some of "this" of course but it is only a side line. I read that themovie was first intended to be a documentary and that gives it a fastpace and veracity. It is actually quite difficult to distinguishbetween what would be fictional and what is reenacted. The acting isnot always strict professional work but is intense and succeed incommunicating feelings to the spectator…it works well! The plot seemssometimes to be "too go to be true" but the film moves on and keeps youinterested until the end. Some the scenes are actually funny and theaudience laughed more than once.

It is a tale about "differences," about "weirdness" and tolerance. TheElephant Man of David Lynch said "I am a human being," this is neverspelled out by Raquela but the message is the same and is delivered ina deep and moving way.

I don't recall any embarrassing or disturbing scene, there is almost nonudity and always displayed in a non provocative way. Queen Raquelashould not be categorized as a "militant" movie, it just a movie aboutlife, a strange life, a non conventional life but absolutely human. Iwould be glad that Queen Raquela gets away from too many Gay & Lesbianfilm festivals and reaches a wider audience, it deserves it!
