Known Trivia

  • As Jake discovers in the movie, the word ‘Monkeyshine’ does actually mean ‘A Practical Joke’.
  • The first names of the films two ‘villans’, Andrew Barker and Peter Marshall, are the middle names of the films original producers – Gene Peter Fallaize, and Nathan Andrew Spencer.
  • Ben Fallaize, younger brother of producer Gene Fallaize, was originally cast in the role of Jake Truman, but had to turn down the role due to other commitments.
  • The ambigram used in the film is a real working ambigram, designed especially for the production by artist John Langdon, who designed the ambigrams used in Dan Brown’s Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code. The lead character of Brown’s books and movies was named Robert Langdon in homage to the artist.
  • Nightingale island – the island that Jake’s map leads to – is a fictional island set in the Pacific ocean, however, the island depicted on the map is a mixture of two real islands in the pacific, Ofu and Olosega. All the actual beach scenes were shot on location on Herm Island, in the Channel Islands.
  • The film had an entirely separate pre-shoot unit, for the purposes of creating a dedicated teaser trailer.
  • ‘Monkeyshine’ was the second time acting in a feature film for actors Michael Sani and Kara Kingsward-Hughes, who previously worked together on horror short 8ight Limbs. Coincidentally, both actors played characters of the same name in both films – Sani as ‘Andrew’, and Kingsward-Hughes as ‘Sophie’.
  • The scene where Andrew offers Sophie the job on the Vines account was totally improvised on set. The Producer and Director liked the scene so much, it made the final cut.

Goofs: Crew or equipment visible: When Jake and Helen are arguing in the office, clapper loader Shirin Fakhrai can be seen sat at one of the desks.

I was lucky enough to attend the world premiere of monkeyshine inKettering in November 08', after my drama club got hold of sometickets, and although I had seen stuff about it in the paper, I didn'treally know what to expect, and didn't hold my breath, but in fact Iwas pleasantly surprised, as for a low-budget film shot in the localarea, it really is very good!

It was great to see local locations used in a 'proper' film, and it wascool to see some people I recognised in it too! Though it was clearlylow-budget, the hard work by the filmmakers is obvious, and it paidoff, as it has a clear plot (and a great prop), that make the filmreally enjoyable, and I can't wait to get it on DVD!
