Story: Chip Douglas is a washed-out alcoholic car salesman at a used car lot. With the endless availability of information over the Internet, customers can now get any information about any car they want. They can find out if it's ever been in a wreck, theft recovery or water damage by means of "CARFAX." In addition, they can also find out a vehicle's true value by factory invoice or Kelly Blue Book, making it almost impossible to make any profit. Now, those still in the business are either trying to come up with scams to make money at it, or to get out of it entirely. While Chip is at an off-track racing bar, he happens across a drink called a Molotov Cocktail. That's when he gets the great idea of burning a bunch of cars forcing people to replace them. Chip then solicits his co-worker buddy John Harris to carry out his desperate plan. Everything works out great, or so they believe…Written by Producers

'EXTREMELY USED CARS: THERE IS NO HOPE': Three Stars (Out of Five)

I worked as a production assistant on this film (voluntarily part time)when it filmed here in Corvallis and Albany, OR three summers ago (Ialso did some minor editing work in post production). My buddy MarkDonnell wrote the film and had been developing the project for manyyears. Having several years of experience in the used car salesbusiness he based a lot of the film's material on experiences workingin the industry and ideas he got from them (probably more so). Afterrewriting the script several times he finally found funding for thefilm (from friends in the used car business as well) and startedshooting the film in 2008. Craig Richards (an experienced bit actor andindie filmmaker working out of Bend, OR) was brought on to direct thefilm and known character actor and TV commercial personality Ian ReedKesler was hired to bring the film some market value. Donnell took thelead in the film and filled the rest of the cast and crew out withmostly friends and local talent from the area. The movie is a darkcomedy about desperate used car salesmen resorting to arson and theftto boost business. It works on some levels and fails at others (mostlydue to freshman inexperience I think) but it's definitely good for atleast some decent laughs.

Donnell plays Chip Douglas, an alcoholic car salesman who constantlydrinks on the job as well as steals petty objects from his employers(including toilet paper). Due to the internet giving far too muchinformation to car buyers it's now nearly impossible for used carsalesmen to make a profit and Chip and his co-workers suffer greatlybecause of this. One day Chip concocts a plan of burning a bunch of oldcustomers' cars, after complimenting them through great customerservice, which will in turn influence them into replacing theirvehicles with him (when the insurance money comes through). He bringshis buddy, and co-worker, John Harris (Aaron Kissinger, who also servedas an assistant director and second unit director on the film) in onthe plan. At the same time another co-worker, Ramone Cordova (RodolfoPaz), is trying to sell a sci-fi porn screenplay he's been working onand another car lot employee named Justin Rhoads (Kesler) is botchingevery sale that comes his way due to his chemically imbalancedschizophrenia and 'Hulk' like temper. Chip and John are forced to dealwith Rhoads as well as a clever Detective (Dirk Wallace) who's on tothem.

The movie has a great premise and a lot of funny ideas but it doesn'talways drive home the punch line. Like I said I think that's in largepart due to the lack of experience among the filmmakers but you canstill tell it was a labor of love for most involved (especially the keyplayers, like Donnell) as well as a great deal of fun (and some of thatdoes translate to the viewer). Some of the jokes definitely do work andsome of the performances are impressive as well. I really liked IanReed Kesler, I think he's a great enthusiastic character actor. I alsofound Rodolfo Paz highly amusing and thought Donnell was an effectiveleading man. One of the problems with the film though is that the maincharacter is too unlikeable . He's funny and charming here and therebut he also does a lot of pretty despicable things throughout (and he'sthe guy were supposed to root for). I think the John Harris characteris more sympathetic (as well as pretty funny) and if the movie wouldhave focused a little more on him there could have been a more lovable'good guy' to care about. Paz's Cordova character is likable as wellbut it's a little too small of a part. Kesler, who's supposed to be themovie's villain, is likable in places oddly too. He just appears alittle crazy but not full of mal intent, which is kind of what we feelabout the Chip Douglas character. The movie is still funny though andfull of interesting characters (besides the ones I mentioned; there's apretty memorable side character named Steven Needlebauer, played byDamon Buckley, as well as others). Some of the jokes and pacing don'tquite hit the mark but it's the type of movie you can tell probablysounded a lot better on paper. Knowing a lot of the guys involved withthe film (including my good friend Jon Musch who has a great silentcameo in the bar scene) I am a little biased but I do think the moviehas a lot going for it despite it's flaws and is definitely worthchecking out.
